New Farm
Brisbane
Family home for 4

About
Presenting as an insensitively reworked Queenslander on a compromised inner- suburban site, this project presented many challenges. Although spatially adequate, the quality of space was poor, with little consideration of climate, natural light, circulation and privacy.
…& we were delighted to be, once again, responding to the housing needs of a family with teenage children...

Resolution
Additions to the original house were demolished & verandas re-established. A two-storey contemporary extension was added to the rear of the house, offset to the northeast to capture light & ventilation. Elevating the extension unlocked previously unavailable city views from the deck & living spaces.

Climate
Creating comfortable living spaces on the southern side of houses can be challenging. However, through a combination of opening up the northeastern veranda & sliding both the existing house & the new extension to the east of the site, significant improvements were achieved. These included enhanced cooling from the north east & south west as well as access to winter sunlight for most spaces.

Outcome
The design resolution delivered a lovely outcome for the family of four, significantly improving liveability &striking a nuanced balance between privacy & connection, well suited to the needs of this family with teenage children.
