Alderley
Brisbane
Family home for 5
About
Alderley house is a family home. An extension & major rework of an existing post-war dwelling, the house provided opportunity to rethink contemporary social views on housing families, in conjunction with the examination of strategies for downscaling the family dwelling.

Resolution
The building work comprised two main components: reworking the existing dwelling to enhance privacy & climatic performance, & adding living spaces at the rear overlooking parkland. Strategies for housing teenage children were examined, exploring ideas about spaces which can be both inclusive & private, enhancing interactions between family members whilst also providing for privacy needs.

Climate
The interior of the original dwelling underwent significant modifications to improve thermal performance. The central corridor was relocated to the southern edge, allowing bedrooms to occupy the northern edge of the floor plan & facilitating better cross ventilation for the private areas of the house.
Outcome
Considered spatial & social planning has resulted in a downsized family home that successfully balances the intricate & evolving dynamics of family life.
